Before Khruangbin headline their FLOOD-sponsored Hollywood Bowl show with Unknown Mortal Orchestra on August 10, the band is making their way across the US with an extensive series of dates in support of their newly released fourth album, A La Sala. Last night the Houston trio wrapped up the third and final night of sold-out shows at Philadelphia’s Metropolitan Opera House where they performed mostly from the back of the stage, enveloped in a haze of smoke and fog as they played nearly their entire new album for the first half of the evening.
Opening the night was LA-based pianist and composer John Carroll Kirby, who brought a jazzy mix of funky jams and flute solos. His performance was full of freeform improvisations, allowing his band members to stretch out, with one even dancing through the entire set. Kirby’s willingness to share the spotlight added a dynamic and engaging element to the performance.
