Sam Wilkes, known across this spinning blue globe as “the busiest boy in music,” has returned with a new trio record alongside drummer Craig Weinrib and guitarist Dylan Day. The self-titled effort will arrive on July 12 via Leaving Records. Most of the album was recorded in a single day, outside, with views of the San Bernardino Mountains. Sounds heady! The first taste of this project, “When I Can Read My Titles Clear,” was tracked during the trio’s second session, which came eight months after the original day of recording, and was inspired by Day requesting Weinrib play a funeral march.

The result is as pleasant as the recording process sounds. The track is built around the hushed pulse of Weinrib’s brushed drums and an enchanting guitar line by Day that eventually gets highlighted with bass chords from Wilkes. Eventually, the guitarist goes—as the kids say—buckwild, running up and down his fretboard like a goddamn marathon man. “Dylan brought in this hymn and with time to learn it properly, the arrangement took shape in a way that felt almost inevitable,” the trio shares. “Playing it together is something we will never forget.” Simple, yet fair.
