There’s something spooky happening in Minnesota in our first look at Alejandro Amenábar‘s (The Others, The Sea Inside) brand-new film Regression. From the film’s first trailer, which was released this morning, we know that Ethan Hawke is a detective assigned to a strange and unusual case in the fall of 1990, that Emma Watson plays an abused victim (presumably at the hands of her father), and a satanic cult might be involved. The kicker? Watson’s character’s father doesn’t remember committing the crime at all.
When watching the trailer you might start to feel as confused and lost as Hawke, but it’s that creepy, hair-standing-up-on-the-back-of-your-neck feeling that makes Regression so intriguing. The film, which is scheduled to be released at the end of summer, seems to be riding the mystery-case/thriller high of shows and films like True Detective and Sound of My Voice, but we aren’t complaining.
Also, yes, there is a Harry Potter reunion, but the trailer gives the strong impression that Professor Lupin isn’t such a cool guy in this movie…
Regression will hit theaters on August 28.
