Memphis rapper Lawrence Matthews has recruited Idi X Teco for a new single entitled “Once More & Again (Our Mourning),” which comes alongside a video that Matthews co-directed with his brother, Martin Matthews. On the track, a chopped vocal sample provides some Tennessee flair for Matthews, who coolly spits over guitar chords and head-nodding drums. “Sometimes it feel like death is the truth and everything else is a lie,” Teco spits, emphasizing the track’s morose nature. Dark, but true!
“Written and recorded in February 2022, this song kind of feels like a funeral procession in New Orleans to me,” Matthews shares of the track. “Something I wrote that intends to honor the mountains of lost Black folks here. The generations of enslaved folks, farmers, everyday Black folks that have lived and died on this land for me to be able to walk it.”
