The word “bonnaroo” is Creole slang for “a really good time,” and for over 20 years, the annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival has been delivering on that promise. Held at Great Stage Park—a 650-acre event space known affectionately as “The Farm”—in Manchester, Tennessee, just about an hour’s drive from Nashville, the multi-stage camping festival has built a reputation for its friendly atmosphere and eclectic lineups, a place where you’ll hear “Happy ’roo!” several times an hour from festivalgoers.
While many other music festivals of this size struggle with overcrowding, long lines, and poor accommodations, Bonnaroo is well-organized, easy to navigate, and, well, a really good time. As an example of the festival getting it right, organizers felt the buzz building for Chappell Roan’s Sunday afternoon set, where she was originally scheduled to perform on one of the tent stages. The LA-based pop star has been making waves on the festival circuit over the past couple of months—including her Statue of Liberty spectacle at Governors Ball last weekend—and was moved at the last minute to one of the main stages to accommodate the anticipated crowd, where she delivered one of the weekend’s most enthralling sets as fans enjoyed her performance without dangerous crowd control issues.
Despite the sweltering temperatures, FLOOD photographers Christian Sarkine and Amanda Krutsick had a very happy ’roo, making the rounds to capture highlights throughout the three-day weekend, including sets from Megan Thee Stallion, Reneé Rapp, Ethel Cain, Carly Rae Jepsen, Cage the Elephant, Taking Back Sunday, Maggie Rogers, and, of course, Chappell Roan.
