At just seven tracks, LA-based songwriter Lee Lewis packs a decade’s worth of frustration, pain, and, ultimately, learning into his long-gestating debut project, the recently released Something Burning. Landing somewhere between an EP and a full-length project, the release is a fully formed statement about queer Black identity and the inevitable existential episodes such a marginalized spot in our society might lead to, as Lewis’ falsetto remains wholly collected as it bursts through a variety of R&B instrumentals.
With the project out now via Bright Antenna Records, Lewis recently performed the track “Willing & Able” for a “Neighborhoods” set. With a full band set up outside the historic nonprofit African-American women’s organization Wilfandel House in his hometown of Los Angeles, the performance harnesses all of the power of the original recording even in its subdued live interpretation.
