I love sports, but I also understand why people don’t. This is why I understand Sports Team, and think their name is quite good. But names don’t matter if the music is stinky, and luckily, the UK band doesn’t make anything that reeks! In fact, their new single, “I’m in Love (Subaru),’ is good! Goooo team! The laid-back disco cut is the first single from the group’s forthcoming album Boys These Days, and is both smooth and delightful. The saxophone is perfectly schmaltzy, self-knowing in its throwback nature.
Regarding the track, guitarist and lyricist Rob Knaggs said: “The mood of the first verse and the chorus is quite sincere, a Hollywood-inspired, teenage love song, but by the time we get to the second verse, we’ve found the worm in the middle of that apple. All the symbols of teenage rebellion, the car itself, have all been co-opted into selling something that can’t actually be bought.”
Boys These Days will arrive on February 28, 2025, which I am refusing to believe is a day that actually exists at this point. Check out the video for “I’m in Love (Subaru)” below, and pre-order the record here.
