Father John Misty, or, as he’s known in my house, “Daddy Johnny,” has announced a greatest hits album and new single. Both of these things have extremely FJM names. Up first, the comp, titled: Greatish Hits: I Followed My Dreams and My Dreams Said to Crawl. The album, out August 16, features the aforementioned new single, “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All.”
The new track is eight and a half minutes long—because of course it is—and starts with a grooving disco jam built around shimmying guitars, organ vamps, and Daptones-esque horns. Congas abound, and at its center is Josh Tillman, who’s laughing or crying or talking shit about us behind our backs or filling us with self-loathing. The answer is probably all of it. There’s also a talking rattlesnake who may or not be the world’s best label exec. IDK, man. I’m kinda in, though—especially the image of Father John Misty doing his greatest hits in Vegas. There’s a lot to dig into here. Get movin’.
Beginning in September, Father John Misty will support Kacey Musgraves on her “Deeper Well World Tour.” Check out “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All” below, and pre-order Greatish Hits here
