After the immense success of last year’s film adaptation of Gone Girl, it was only a matter of time before another Gillian Flynn novel got the silver screen treatment. Yesterday, the prayers of twisted-mystery-novel lovers everywhere were answered in the form of the first trailer for Dark Places.
Based on Flynn’s 2009 novel of the same name, Dark Places stars Charlize Theron as Libby Day—a woman who survived the massacre of her mother (Christina Hendricks) and sisters by the hand of her brother (Corey Stoll). Twenty-five years after the horrific event, Day is approached by Lyle Wirth (Nicholas Hoult) and a group of vigilante detectives (endearingly called “The Kill Club”) who believe that her brother is innocent. Day must face her past pain to help finally put the murders to rest. From these first clips, it seems like satanic cults and a knife-wielding Chloë Grace Moretz are involved…
Dark Places is in theaters on August 6.
