Kamala Harris-Tim Walz supporters got a surprise in their inboxes Thursday when the campaign announced that legendary R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe would join Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and songwriter Jason Isbell for a free concert on Friday at Pittsburgh’s Schenley Park.

The event kicked off with Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, who rallied the crowd by saying, “Anger is only one letter away from ‘D,’ and that ‘D’ stands for Donald Trump, who must not be allowed to return to the White House.” Gainey urged everyone to register to vote, reminding them of Michelle Obama’s famous words: “Do something.”

When Doug Emhoff took the stage, he spoke proudly of his wife, calling her “the right person for the job,” and stressed to the crowd that with less than 30 days until the election, it’s crucial to get involved. He shared his personal connection to R.E.M., recounting the many times he’s seen them live along with his brother’s love for the band. Emhoff mentioned his friendship with Stipe, noting how honored he was to introduce him and Jason Isbell. He praised Isbell, highlighting his unique style and importance as an artist.

With that, Stipe and Isbell took the stage to thunderous applause from the crowd, many of whom sported faded R.E.M. T-shirts.

“It’s been a while since I’ve sung these songs—16 years, in fact. But I’m thrilled to be here with Jason and the soon-to-be First Gentleman of the United States of America,” Stipe said before launching into R.E.M.’s classic, “The One I Love.” The set also included Isbell’s “Traveling Alone” and “Hope the High Road” before closing with R.E.M.’s “Driver 8,” a song Stipe hasn’t performed live since 2008.

Between songs, Stipe shared that he had visited eight countries over the summer, where fans pleaded with him, “Do not let that man get back into power.” He passed that message to the audience, urging them to register and ensure their friends and family do the same.

As the concert ended, the crowd left with a sense of excitement and awe, having witnessed an unexpected performance on a perfect evening. Check out more images from the event below.
