Indie-pop duo Foreign Air returned last month with their first new material since their sophomore album Hello Sunshine in 2022 with the orchestral new-wave cut “Awkward Bones.” While there’s still no word on a new release, today they’re doubling down on this new era with an even more experimental take on the sound they’ve been honing for nearly a decade. As the title suggests, “Save Us” is a dire plea for salvation that blends the orchestral flourishes of its predecessor with a driving breakbeat and lightly modulated vocals. “‘Save Us’ dives deep into the existential anxieties of a world on the edge,” the band explains. “The track speaks to the overwhelming feelings of disconnection, loss, and the quiet implosion of modern life, with haunting lyrics that reflect on a universal search for meaning in uncertain times.”
The track was recorded with John Tranium at Spacebomb Studios in Richmond, Virginia—where calming cellos and violins were placed atop the tense, futuristic sound—although it was initially conceived elsewhere. “The song began during a writing retreat to North Carolina, centered around the breakbeat and bassline,” the band notes. “Jesse started playing the piano and singing the ‘Who will save me’ vocal. Using Soundtoys’ [Little] AlterBoy, we transformed the vocal to give it a sampled-like feel.”
Meanwhile, the music video was also filmed in North Carolina, with director Josh Thomas capturing the footage in Charlotte. “[The video] takes viewers on a journey through decaying, desolate landscapes as we search for meaning and connection,” adds the band. “The surreal visuals reflect the song’s themes of isolation and fragility, capturing the song’s emotional depth.”
