Sharon Van Etten is back and with more band than ever before. Her new group, The Attachment Theory, consists of Devra Hoff on bass, Teeny Lieberson on keys and guitar, and Jorge Balbi on drums and machines (I‘ll tell ya what, I’d love to play “machines” in a band), and their self-titled record will arrive on February 7 via Jagjaguwar. Lead single “Afterlife” begins with some bleeps and bloops and (drum) machines before Van Etten comes rolling into the picture with a delightful falsetto. The track moves toward the analog way of life in its latter half, with the band cooking up a chorus that’s quite large and anthemic. Festival stages, brace yourselves.
Regarding the album, Van Etten shared: “For the first time in my life I asked the band if we could just jam. Words that have never come out of my mouth—ever! But I loved all the sounds we were getting. I was curious—what would happen? In an hour we wrote two songs that ended up becoming ‘I Can’t Imagine’ and ‘Southern Life.’”
Those are other songs on the album. Check out “Afterlife” below, and pre-order Sharon Van Etten & the Attachment Theory here.
