We’re only about seven months removed from bob junior’s debut album—a collection of impressive collaborations with the likes of Dent May, Foudeqush, Alfie Templeman, and Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino aptly titled friends vol. 1—but the bedroom-pop songwriter and producer is already back with a new single boosted by a high-caliber feature. “forever on my mind” sees Esteban Muñoz backed by recently revived Chicago indie-pop outfit The Walters, who help emphasize the composition’s acoustic-led sunshine-pop feel that playfully contrasts with its downcast vocals and longing lyrics.
As Muñoz notes, the track was ultimately the result of a set of coincidences that involved an unused studio recording and an invitation to collaborate. “While I was rolling out my album, I got a DM from [The Walters’] Luke Olson saying, ‘Would love to do a bob/Walters collab.’ Hell yeah. I’ve been listening to their stuff for a while, so I was already a fan. We planned a session while in LA, but first they got sick, then I got sick, then they headed out for a tour—and before we knew it I was on a plane back to Norway. We never met up. A total bummer. But then I suddenly remembered this track, tried to imagine it with Luke’s vocals on it, and it just clicked in my head. Of course it’s Luke! His voice on this will be amazing.”
