It may have seemed like a novelty back in 2018 when Deftones launched the inaugural Dia De Los Deftones, a one-day festival in San Diego that the metal heroes curated and headlined, along with an eclectic lineup featuring rap (Future), punk (Rocket From the Crypt), pop (a newcomer by the name of Doja Cat), and everything in between (Ho99o9). Six years and a pandemic later, the fest is still going strong, returning this past weekend to Petco Park with one of their strongest lineups yet, including IDLES, Paris Texas, HEALTH, Duster, GEL, Qendresa, and Sunny Day Real Estate (who played their seminal Diary album in its entirety).
Naturally, Deftones headlined the fest again, playing a far-reaching 19-song set where they revisited several rarely played tracks and even performed their cover of Japan’s “Ghosts” for the first time live (their version originally appeared as an iTunes bonus track in 2010).
FLOOD photographer Skylar Watkins made the journey to San Diego to document the scene. Check out some highlights below.
