When Spacemen 3’s Peter Kember (a.k.a. Sonic Boom) teamed up with Animal Collective’s Panda Bear for 2022’s Reset, little did we know how well those songs would translate to both dub and mariachi. After releasing a revision on the album leaning into that first genre, the pair returned earlier this year with the Reset Mariachi EP, in which they teamed up with the group Mariachi 2000 de Cutberto Pérez to reinvent a handful of these songs once again.
And while Sonic Boom has already announced another new collaboration with Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips, he’s focusing on this most recent chapter with his “Hacked” takeover featuring gems of Latin pop and Mexican folk, as well as roots rock and lounge and early American rock staples by Chuck Berry and Phil Spector.
