It doesn’t seem that long ago that Trevor Powers was a Boise State student swooping in on a velvet pillow with his dance ballad “17,” but suddenly it’s been four years since The Year of Hibernation came out—his first LP as Youth Lagoon—and now, at age twenty-six, he’s really not a kid anymore.
Following 2013’s Wondrous Bughouse, Powers appears to have returned from the glitter dimension (according to his new press photo, anyway) with Savage Hills Ballroom, a record that was written while dealing with the death of a close friend. The first single, “The Knower,” was released as a free 45 last week at select record stores, but starting today, the track—a captivating swirl of whimsy topped with a cherry of malaise—is available to stream below.
Savage Hills Ballroom is out September 25 on Fat Possum.
