While Toronto-born EDM artist Whipped Cream is still basking in the release of last summer’s Is This Real? LP, her alter ego “Careline” is just getting started. Her self-titled EP under the name hints at a more industrial-club sound than what we’ve come to expect from Whipped Cream, while additionally leaning more heavily into the trance and trap elements of her prior work. It’s the soundtrack to a later night out than you might have planned for, where you’re whisked away to a rave in a venue that you always just assumed was an abandoned scrapyard.
With that EP arriving tomorrow via Boom Records, we had the artist walk us through a handful of her influences for this next chapter, citing everyone from Gesaffelstein to Stromae to Enya as inspiration for the synth-driven emotions and fun vibes of these six aggressively pulsating tracks. Check out her thoughts on each pick below, and pre-save the EP here.
Kanye West, “On Sight”
This song is the perfect blend of early electronic synths. Ye is one of my biggest inspirations.
Stromae, “Alors on danse”
One of my favorite dance songs of all time. I illuminated this vibe on “Techno Is My Only Love.”
The Chemical Brothers, “Hey Boy Hey Girl”
I absolutely love this record for the fun vibes it brings and this is another one that helped inspire “Techno Is My Only Love.”
Gesaffelstein, “Opr”
My one and only favorite Gesaffelstein song. You can hear his emotions and feelings through his synths, and it’s that feeling that inspired this new project;s sound in the early stages.
ANOHNI, “Drone Bomb Me”
This song is the perfect blend of melancholy synths and cinematic uniqueness within the voice, the soul. This feeling is what I was trying to embody on “Dance The Night Away.”
James Blake & Lil Yachty, “Save the Savior”
I think Lil Yachty is one of the greatest songwriters of our time. His melodies, overall writing—I love it. James Blake is also one of my favorite producers of all time, and I’ve been told multiple times that my music can have these R&B vibes even though at its core it’s dance music, which is amazing. I grew up on James Blake and with R&B, so hearing people make that connection automatically…they get it.
Mk.gee, “Alesis”
Although this song has no sonic similarity to anything on my project, I couldn’t stop playing it while I wrote Careline. I had it on repeat
Tchami, “Adieu”
Tchami helped inspire “God Is a Gentleman,” and I just love this song. That bassline is too crazy!
Odd Mob, “Left to Right”
This song is having such a moment and helped inspire the vibes for “God Is a Gentleman” and “Techno Is My Only Love”—it’s a bop. Always goes off when I drop it live.
Enya, “Only Time”
All of Enya’s chords and melodies definitely inspired “Dance the Night Away.” This song is my jam! You’ll find a lot of early 2000s influence in Careline.
