Jacksonville-based indie-rockers flipturn kicked off 2025 with a brand new record, a sold-out hometown release show, their network TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel, and the announcement of their largest headlining tour of their careers that concludes with appearances at South Carolina’s High Water Festival and Bonnaroo. Needless to say, Burnout Days, the title of that new collection, is a bit of a misnomer.
In the midst of this flurry of activity, we caught up with the band’s Dillon Basse and Tristan Duncan on a foggy day in their Florida hometown for a “Neighborhoods” session, wherein they perform relaxed versions of the album tracks “Window” and, ironically, given the uncooperative weather, “Sunlight.” “‘Window’ and ‘Sunlight’ felt like the most fitting to play today, not only for the sheer irony of recording these songs in a sunroom, but also because most of the record was written in this room,” Basse shares. “For the last two years, Tristan, Madeline [Jarman], Mitch [Fountain], and I lived together in this house right on the St. Johns River. For years, people have asked how growing up in Florida had an influence on our writing, but this truly felt like the first record that was inspired by Florida’s natural beauty and wildlife.”
