I don‘t know about a “mega circuit,” but you know what sounds like a lot of fun? A mega circus. Huge elephants, biggest tent you’ve ever seen, all day long. Sign me up. Alas, that’s not why we’re here. Fortunately, we are here because it was thee great Japanese Breakfast who hath crushed my dreams with a new song titled “Mega Circuit.” It’s from her forthcoming album For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), out March 21. The folk-rock-soul hybrid makes me forget all about my dreamed-up circus with one of the nastiest and most delightful lil’ organ vamps you’ll ever here. Is it even an organ? I don’t know! But alongside these perfect slap-happy shuffling drums that Blake Mills always seems to record, and perfect tambourine accents, it doesn’t even matter. I’m bathing in this thing. It’s that clean.

Regarding the song, Michelle Zauner said: “‘Mega Circuit’ was one of the first songs I wrote, intent on making a creepier, more guitar driven record. The song is sort of an examination of contemporary masculinity, and explores a conflicted desire to embrace a generation that in the absence of positive role models has found refuge in violence and bigotry. We had the legendary Jim Keltner—who’s played on everything from ‘These Days,’ to ‘Here You Come Again’ to ‘Dream Weaver’—come in and play the fiercest shuffle you’ve ever heard.”

I told you the drum shuffle was good! You never listen to me, but as soon as rock and roll icon Michelle Zauner confirms it, it’s taken as gospel. Check out the video for ”Mega Circuit” below, and pre-order For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) here.
