Last year, R&B singer Kelis released Food, a swampy, horn-swaddled album whose songs read like a pretty excellent soul-food menu: “Breakfast,” “Jerk Rib,” “Hooch,” “Cobbler,” “Friday Fish Fry,” “Biscuits ‘n’ Gravy.” (It’s admittedly possible that “Hooch” isn’t about cheap whiskey.)
After having delivered Food to fans at SXSW via food truck and putting together her own specials for the Cooking Channel, Kelis is taking the logical next step: releasing a cookbook. But this isn’t exactly Jewel’s book of poetry. Between albums, Kelis studied at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu and is a certified saucier with her own line of sauces. My Life on a Plate features recipes from around the world, focusing primarily on Southern soul food, Carribean, and Asian cuisine, according to the book’s description. No word on whether there’s a recipe for milkshakes.
Kyle Books is bringing out My Life on a Plate on September 7.
