We caught up with UK trio HotWax a little over a year ago when their sophomore EP Invite me, kindly dropped, further generating interest in the alt-rockers’ yet-to-be-released debut full-length. Fronted by Tallulah Sim-Savage and Lola Sam, with drummer Alfie Sayers rounding out the lineup, the outfit remarked on their mission with these songs to continue to trust their gut while adding more substance to the recordings. “We didn’t overthink the first EP,” Sim-Savage shared with us. “But on these songs we really went into more detail. We tried to even it out a bit and add more lead guitar parts.”

With that debut project, Hot Shock, finally arriving this Friday, the trio are braving the cold weather to perform two tracks from the LP—pre-album single “Wanna Be a Doll” and the yet-to-be-released album closer “Pharmacy”—for a “Neighborhoods” session. Set up on their friends’ houseboat that’s been converted from a Cold War–era German minesweeper in the West Sussex town of Shoreham, the band establish a fascinating backdrop for their two-song acoustic set. “We’ve spent a lot of time there, it being so close to Brighton where we met,” Sim-Savage shares of the locale. “We love the location—it’s so beautiful and peaceful, but at the same time cluttered and surreal. It was one of the first sunny, still days of the year, and we filmed it with the help of our family and friends all pulling together, which felt really good.”
