Just a few weeks after announcing two nights at The Hollywood Bowl with LCD Soundsystem (and a few months after announcing their signing to Rough Trade Records), Pulp have revealed that they’ll be playing some new music at those gigs. Why? Because the Britpop legends will be dropping More, their first new album in almost 24 years, on June 6 via their new label. First single “Spike Island” is out now. Produced by James Ford (as the whole album was), the track’s lyrics were inspired by The Stone Roses’ notorious gig on Ireland’s Spike Island, where a DJ drew the crowd’s ire as he shouted “Spike Island, come alive!” all day.
Jarvis Cocker also shared some thoughts on the “Spike Island” video, which was created as the result of being asked to “investigate” AI. “The weekend I began work on the video was a strange time,” he shared of the experience. “I went out of the house and kept expecting weird transformations of the surrounding environment due to the images the computer had been generating. The experience had marked me. I don’t know whether I’ve recovered yet.”
