The hot rumor says that this will be director Sam Mendes‘s last James Bond film, which is a disappointment given the ways that he’s shaped 007’s narrative. Under Mendes’ watch, the Bond franchise has entered the 21st century as a fully self-conscious machine willing to accept the stronger political realities that would face a spy of his talents (which is another way of saying “recklessness”).
If its just-released trailer is to be believed, Spectre will continue in that newly forged tradition. It finds Daniel Craig‘s Bond adrift in Mexico City, doing a little freelance work off the books, but he’s called back to London to investigate the titular organization, which seems to exist entirely as a result of Bond’s actions.
