Kelcey Ayer, a perennial FLOOD favorite both from his days in Local Natives and with his solo work, has returned with a delightfully wacky new single entitled “No Sleep.”
Ayer wrote the song after being amazed by just how little sleep he and his wife were getting after having their first child. Sarcastically inspired by that classic “don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee” slogan, Ayer brings his signature wit and intuitive melodic sensibility to “No Sleep.” The song is really funny, but Ayer still manages to still create something relatable and lasting. Particularly poignant? “Don’t talk to me ’til LAX’s neverending facelift has had its coffee.” Come for the quoteables, stay for an obscurely poignant George Kittle reference.
Regarding the cut, Ayer said: “When my wife and I had our first child, we were absolutely floored at how little sleep you get. The song is basically me spiraling into madness. I took that cliche phrase you see on shirts at tourist gift shops ‘don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee,’ and just added crazier and crazier conditions to it. I had so much fun just trying to make myself laugh, which is not the way making music typically goes, so that was refreshing. I self-engineered/produced the track in my home studio in LA.”
Check out the new single below, and look out for Ayer’s new EP, No Sleep, on July 18.
