Julian Cubillos has returned with a new single, “Returning.” Did you see what I did there? The track will be featured on his forthcoming self-titled album, to be released on July 25 via Ruination Record Co. (the first single “Talking to Myself“ was released earlier this month). “Returning” is a bubbly pop-folk cut with cosmic trinkets that come out to play during the song’s latter half. There is also an extremely sick bass fill that barely makes its way into the song before it ends.

Cubillos sings of the annoyance of being heartbroken, the mundanity that comes alongside being unable to get over a former love. “How does it feel to be lost here, too? / Tired of wasting time on you / I don’t even know my mind,” he sings. “This is sort of an all-encompassing love song that touches upon recurring patterns I’ve seen in relationships throughout my life, particularly those marked by trauma bonding, projection, and loss of self,” he shares. “It’s rooted in that really intense feeling you get when you recognize your own trauma in someone else and about all the toxic places that it can take you.

“It’s not all bad, though,” he adds. “I think the moral of the story here is that if you turn all the love and energy you’re blasting out there toward yourself instead, it’s possible to break the cycle and become who you’re actually meant to be.”
