Yoshika Colwell’s forthcoming debut album On the Wing was the product of a turbulent period in the English songwriter’s life—though that doesn’t necessarily come through in the album’s 11 gentle folk tunes. Slated for release next month, the album follows a series of singles and an EP that set the groundwork for these somber tracks which hit peak positivity with the recently released single “In Bloom,” which Colwell classified as “sunny nihilism.”
We caught up with Colwell back in March in the midst of SXSW’s chaos to record a “Neighborhoods” session in the peaceful surroundings of local-favorite swimming spot Barton Springs in the Texas capital’s Zilker Park. Strumming through her single “Please” and the On the Wing album cut “Last Night” in front of a placid body of water felt like a more apt setting to fully take in the songs’ lyrics than the crowded venues and rowdy streets during the festival’s downtown takeover.
