Jay Som (a.k.a. songwriter and producer Melina Duterte) has announced that her new solo album, Belong, will arrive on October 10 via Polyvinyl. The first singles from the album, “Float” and “A Million Reasons Why,“ are both out now. The former features Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World, while other guests on Duterte’s first project in six years include Hayley Williams and Mini Trees’ Lexi Vega.

“Float” is an alt-rock-leaning track with chugging guitars, a pulsing drum groove, and a chorus that features the vocal duo imploring one another to “float, don’t fight.” “This song is about desperately trying to hold on to past versions of yourself for self preservation,” Duterte shared. “The fear of the unknown is so overwhelming that sometimes the best solution is to sit with it instead of fighting or running from it.” Adkins added: “Melina is an absolute professional in all aspects of music creation. I am honored she had space in her vision for me to contribute. And it was a lot of fun to work on. Great song!”

“A Million Reasons Why,” on the other hand, is a lighter, hazier affair, taking elements of psych-rock and experimental pop to create something more atmospheric and abstract. Check out both tracks below, and pre-order Belong here.
