Nine Inch Nails have confirmed that they’ll be handling the soundtrack for the forthcoming Tron movie (subtitled Ares), with their score set to be released on September 19 via Interscope Records. While we’ve heard plenty of scores from the band’s Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, this project is credited to the band.

As revealed in an exclusive with Empire: “The ask first came from Tom MacDougall, President of Walt Disney Music, in the wake of Reznor and Ross’s work on Pixar’s Soul. ‘A couple of years ago, he came by the studio and said, ‘Do you think you guys would be interested in scoring Tron?’ He didn’t even finish the sentence, I was like, ‘Fuck yes, we’d want to do that.’ It was the next part that caught him off guard. ‘He said, ‘How would you feel about if it was credited as Nine Inch Nails, versus Trent and Atticus?’ We weren’t expecting to hear that question.”

The soundtrack’s first single, “As Alive As You Need Me to Be,” is a buzzsaw of synths, electronic drums, and rubbery bass lines. Very Tron-esque, indeed. Never thought a Disney movie would feature a song that features Trent Reznor singing, “It’s almost like a tongue on the back of my neck,” but here we are. Check out the song below, and pre-order the Tron: Ares soundtrack here.
