LA dance-punk trio Automatic have announced that their third LP, Is It Now?, will be released on September 26 via Stones Throw. The project was produced by former Cults percussionist Loren Humphrey, who’s previously worked with Arctic Monkeys and Lana Del Rey. On the record’s lead single “Mercury,” the trio cooks up a retro-leaning synth-pop track that takes up elements of disco, funk, and French psych-pop.
Regarding the song, synth player and co-vocalist Izzy Glaudini said that the lyrics are a reminder “not to fall into nihilism or cynicism, to instead see life through a bit of a spiritual lens.” She added: “Despite the horrible shit constantly happening, life can still be mysterious and beautiful. I wanted to lean into a sense of dreaminess, and to have the verses feel like a dark lullaby.”
