Lest you should think that Roland Emmerich is simply an explosion- and CGI-based one-trick pony, the director of such undeniable classics as Independence Day, The Patriot, and The Day After Tomorrow (not to mention the upcoming classic Independence Day 2) is trying something a little bit different this time around with Stonewall.

Based around the time and events surrounding the Stonewall riots in the summer of ’69, the flick stars newcomer Jeremy Irvine as a runaway whisked into the developing LGBT community of New York right as tensions come to a head with police, ultimately sparking the modern gay rights movement as we know it today.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Joey King, and Ron Perlman costar along with the tears that you will cry.

Stonewall is out September 25.
