King of mockumentaries Christopher Guest has remained distant from the genre in recent years (thereby presenting others the opportunity to take their best shot at it) but after a decade’s wait, he will attempt a return to the throne with the new feature Mascots in 2016.
Netflix picked up the film for distribution, pushing Guest into the elite and diverse crowd of upcoming releases for the streaming service, which includes Pee Wee’s Big Holiday, Brad Pitt’s War Machine, and Cary Fukunaga’s first post-True Detective project Beasts of No Nation.
According to the initial announcement on Twitter, Mascots will follow the “drama, intrigue, and occasional excitement of the 8th World Mascot Association Championships,” whatever the hell that means. No other information has really been divulged, but you’d have to imagine that Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara will be involved because come on.
In the meantime, here’s a clip from Best in Show to keep us occupied.
Mascots is set for release sometime in 2016 on Netflix.
