It’s hard to book a four-band bill for an amphitheater gig and maintain a high level of energy throughout the night, but that’s exactly what went down on Friday at Huntington Bank Pavilion when Turnstile came through Chicago with Mannequin Pussy, Speed, and Jane Remover in tow. A massive line had already formed to get into the main pit area by the time doors had opened.
The moshing started with Jane Remover and carried on throughout the night—one circle pit in the back, and another in front of the stage. Speed’s set was equal parts chaotic and wholesome, as vocalist Jem Siow made a speech about what hardcore meant to them and how the community really lifted him up, at which point Chicago locals Hold My Own came out to join them for a song. Mannequin Pussy kept the rage going as they sincerely addressed our dismal political moment while effectively pumping up the crowd at the same time.
Once Turnstile started, the circle pits were separate no more. The crowd rushed the weakness in the barricade, lifting it up and out as the second-tier general audience funneled into the main pit after dissolving the barrier in the crowd. Local photography duo Moneyshot4all were on site for all four sets—check out their highlights below.
