Earlier this summer, alt-pop songwriter Sadie Jean unveiled a single called “I Tried” that saw the artist reckoning with a breakup as she momentarily foresees the domestic life the couple could’ve had together that involved “neighborhoods and baby names.” Perhaps more so than its succeeding single “Slow Burn,” it’s a fairly frank open letter to an ex—or exes—meant to rid herself of pent-up emotions. “I need every boy I’ve ever loved to hear ‘I Tried,’” she shared upon its release. “It perfectly bottles up the feeling of accepting defeat after a relationship turns one-sided.”
Given the aforementioned lyrics, it seemed like fate that Jean agreed to film a “Neighborhoods” visual for us. Not only that, but the video of her and touring guitarist Andrew Wholf performing the track takes place in the backseat of a car as it drives around the LA suburbs, tying the visual into the fantasy dreamed up on “I Tried.” Check out their performance—stripped down to piano and guitar—below.
