Just a month after moving to Chicago, the Ann Arbor–formed chamber-pop collective Racing Mount Pleasant commended their new hometown’s audience on how well they protect their neighbors. The severity of the city’s recent ICE raids was felt the other night as they took the stage at Thalia Hall ahead of headliners Geese, setting a dramatic mood that was matched shortly thereafter when the Brooklyn art-punk band walked onstage in total darkness and played “Husbands” from their new LP Getting Killed before the full force of the lights kicked on. While there was little to no time between each song, fans took every spare second to shout out their love. “Aw thanks, you’re a bunch of charmers,” frontman Cameron Winter uttered. “Don’t worry, we still have 17 more to go.”

Breaking right into “2122” and other hits from 2023’s 3D Country stirred the whole floor to a moshing frenzy as fans rocked back and forth on the barricade screaming every word. Returning to the the new album, the crowd fully settled down to feel the crushing weight of “Au Pays du Cocaine” and to sing along to the trans-generational anthem that is “Taxes.” For the encore, Winter returned with solo renditions of “Domoto” and “Long Island City Here I Come” before the band joined in for a thunderous “Trinidad” that had fans of all ages shouting down the lyrics from the pit below and the balcony above.
