Brighton-based rock group big long sun really do put the “big” in their name, counting eight full-time members, all of whom you can hear on their new single “my stars aligning.” The scraggly psych-folk cut builds around infectious harmonies and slap-happy drums. There’s also a delightful accordion melody and texture that serves as a nice counterpoint to the full bass line and White Album–inspired guitar accents.

“‘my stars aligning ’is a song written for love lost and love regained,” shares the band’s Jamie Broughton. “A timeless love song, in other words. One that resonates with both extremes. I was inspired by artists like The Flaming Lips, Pixies, ABBA, and Emitt Rhodes. I wanted to fuse together a kind of folk anthemia with the cool, slick writing of the pop greats. The track has a fun arrangement, too, with weirder and more wonderful instruments like the accordion, fan organ, recorder, tin whistle, violin, and clarinet making appearances in the creases and folds of the music.”

Broughton also shares that the track marks the first time his bandmates were involved in the recording process (including half the band providing backing vocals), while “my stars aligning” also coincides with the octet inking a deal with State51 Distribution. Check out “my stars aligning” below.
