Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the bassist for iconic bands The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has died at the age of 63. Mounfield was a founding member of the former band and joined the latter in 1996, playing with the group for 15 years. After unleashing Stone Roses debut album in 1989, "Mani" rose to prominence as a central figure in the "Madchester" and Britpop movements, influencing generations of artists that followed, from Oasis to Arctic Monkeys. His dynamic bass lines were a driving force behind many classic tracks from the era, including Stone Roses' "Fools Gold," "She Bangs the Drum," and "I Wanna Be Adored," and Primal Scream's "Kowalski."

The musician’s brother, Greg, shared the news on Facebook: “IT IS WITH THE HEAVIEST OF HEARTS THAT I HAVE TO ANNOUNCE THE SAD PASSING OF MY BROTHER GARY MANI MOUNFIELD RIP RKID.” The Stone Roses’ Ian Brown wrote on X: “REST IN PEACE MANi X.” Liam Gallagher of Oasis added: “In total shock and absolutely devastated on hearing the news about Mani. My hero, RIP R Kid.” Find both tributes below, as well as reflections from The Charlatans Tim Burgess and Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder.
