Flea, who you may know as the voice of Donnie Thornberry, has announced that his first solo LP is on the way. The Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist (you might know him from that, too, I suppose) will drop Honora on March 27 via Nonesuch Records. To herald in the new release, Flea has shared “Traffic Lights,” which was co-written by Thom Yorke and Josh Johnson and features vocals from Flea’s Atoms for Peace bandmate.
Regarding the collaboration, Flea said: “Something about it reminded me of Atoms for Peace, so I sent it to Thom. Just knowing him, I thought it would be a rhythm and a sensibility that he would relate to. And I was right, he did. With a gorgeous melody and the words, you know, about living in the ‘upside down’ and how do you make sense of things when we’re getting all this fake shit and real shit? Everyone has their ways of dealing with the world. But he’s just the warmest, free flowing, jamming motherf*cker.”
Honora consists of six original songs alongside interpretations of tracks by George Clinton and Eddie Hazel, Jimmy Webb, Frank Ocean and Shea Taylor, and Ann Ronell. The album was made with a pretty incredible collection of musicians that consists of Johnson on saxophone along with guitarist Jeff Parker, drummer Deantoni Parks, and bassist Anna Butterss. The album features vocals from Flea alongside Thom Yorke and Nick Cave.
Flea has also announced that the Honora band will head out on an international tour this May. Check out those dates and listen to “Traffic Lights” below, and pre-order Honora here.
