CHVRCHES multi-instrumentalist Martin Doherty and session drummer Jonny Scott have maintained healthy careers outside of the LA-via-Glasgow band over the past 15 years, with various production, composition, and studio performance gigs with the likes of The Twilight Sad, Mogwai, and Idlewild. Back in November, they announced that they’d be teaming up for a new duo project called The Leaving, with lead single “Saved” introducing the band with buzzing industrial electronics, sharp guitars, and prominent vocals. Now, they’ve returned with a second track that plays up the clubby angle of its predecessor with more emphasis on its electronic washes and vocal modulations.
“‘Pray’ is rooted in a conversation about what is left when someone is gone,” Doherty shared in a press statement. “To be a source of comfort for a person you care about deeply in their time of greatest need, even though you do not feel qualified or capable. It’s about becoming stronger in remembrance of them, and that which was the source of your deepest sadness, becoming your greatest strength.”
While there’s still no word on a debut album, the duo notes that they’ll be announcing their first live dates in the near future. For now, check out “Pray” below.
