After the release of this past fall’s Total Popstar LP and the tour alongside Indigo De Souza that followed, Mothé seems glad to be back home in LA where they’ve been plugged into the local music scene for some time now. For a recent “Neighborhoods” session, the songwriter set up in a parking lot behind their friend Mario’s venue and community space Above the Bridge to give an encore performance of the album tracks “Death of the Limousine” and “Naked in the Hotel Bar” free from the pressures and stresses of touring, as well as from the emotional turmoil the album was forged within.
“I spent an entire year just partying and freestyling my feelings into a microphone,” Mothé shares of the process behind Total Popstar, “so I wanted to set up the [‘Neighborhoods’] set in a similar fashion to how the songs were created: one hand on the keyboard, the other on the microphone, because I was too frantic to set up a mic stand, just rambling all of my worst qualities into the ether. Los Angeles is a very beautiful place, but I typically spend my time surrounded by concrete and intensity. It’s where I’m from. I’m thankful my friend Mario let us set up in his venue’s parking lot around the broken down cars, it felt very true to my spirit.”
