Hot off the release of his fourth studio album Best of Our Possible Lives, Boy Golden is probably looking forward to thawing out after another winter in his hometown of Winnipeg. The alt-country songwriter is gearing up to tour his native Canada, with a set of spring dates in the US to follow, though it seems like he’s also happy to have a bit of downtime at home in the snow-covered neighborhood of St. Boniface in the Manitoban capital. “This is the French area of town, and I speak French as a second language, so I like it a lot,” he shares. “Most of my friends live in this neighborhood.”

Boy Golden recently filmed a “Neighborhoods” session for us at the nearby Whittier Park, a space that’s long been dear to the songwriter. It serves as the perfect backdrop during his chilly acoustic performance of the album’s title track—despite lyrics about “clear blue skies” feeling like a distant fantasy. “It’s a beautiful slice of nature that includes both the Seine River, which you can see frozen behind me, and the Red River, which also freezes up in the winter,” he explains. “Nearby there is a historic fort, Fort Gibraltar, which has been in use since 1809. In February, a giant winter festival called Festival du Voyageur takes over the whole neighborhood. It’s a great place to live!”
