Within the first trailer of Tom Hooper‘s (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables) latest film, we’re presented with the confusion, denial, joy, and love felt by Lili Elbe—a transgender pioneer and painter (formerly known as Einar Wegener). The Danish Girl, which is based on David Ebershoff’s 2000 novelization of true events, follows Elbe’s story as one of the first individuals to go through a sex-change operation. The film stars Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything, Les Misérables) and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), and is already garnering significant Oscar buzz. This emotional trailer does little to damper that.
The Danish Girl is out November 27.
