Future Islands are celebrating 20 years as a band with a collection of mostly unreleased music entitled From a Hole in the Floor to a Fountain of Youth, due May 22. The songs include alternate cuts, rarities, and other nuggets from the band’s lengthy history, half of which have never materialized on streaming platforms.
The songs that encompass the collection were first gathered into a playlist by bassist William Cashion, who also chose the title for the album based on a line from the band’s 2009 track “Pinnochio.” “I’ve always loved the imagery of that lyric,” he explained. “The hole in the floor is the everyday, but the fountain is the magic that happens when the life you dreamed about actually becomes the one you’re living. It’s the dream and the reality existing in the same room.”
