After first establishing their sound in the chillwave era, LA’s Cannons have long been associated with the early 2010s’ rose-tinted nostalgia for the ’80s. Over after forming, that reverence for the past can still be heard on the band’s fifth album Everything Glows, albeit through an inevitably personalized lens for the trio’s songwriter Michelle Joy. “We come from light, that’s the oldest truth there is,” the band shared upon the record’s release last Friday. “The dark just made us forget. Everything Glows is about remembering.”
The playlist the band made for their “Hacked” episode for this week’s FLOOD FM takeover is also about remembering, with Joy, Ryan Clapham, and Paul Davis mostly choosing old favorites for their contributions to the playlist: Indie-pop peers like Beach House and The Radio Dept. land alongside the ’80s-era figures that inspired their sounds, such as Roxy Music Cyndi Lauper. Check out their full playlist every day this week (March 30 – April 3) at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 5 p.m., and 10 p.m. PT only on FLOOD FM.
