Beth Orton has returned with “The Ground Above,” her first new music since the release of her stellar 2022 LP Weather Alive. Clocking in at eight-and-a-half minutes, the single is a sprawling epic that moves from quiet folk-rock to almost kraut-inspired post-punk.

Orton recruited a number of talented players to join her on the track, including Vishal Nayak on drums, Shahzad Ismaily on bass, Sam Beste on piano, Christos Stylianides on trumpet, Grey McMurray on electric guitar, and Dave Okumu on something called the “backwards electric guitar.”
