In Through the Front with Lasers sees Pittsburgh-based songwriter Tory Silver grappling with all the normal stuff adults have to deal with: thoughts of mortality, dead-end jobs, friends being inducted into cults and/or being medically cut open with lasers. Maybe the subject matter of these songs isn’t always universal, but that just speaks to Silver’s approach to indie rock. Aided by guitar-heavy production from Jay Som’s Melina Duterte, this latest collection only backs down on her lightly surreal take on the discomforts of everyday life.

Ahead of last week’s release date, Silver and her band took to her vibraphone player’s backyard to film a “Neighborhoods” session consisting of the album tracks “Microwave” and “Dogs.” Set up in the Pittsburgh area of Troy Hill, the quartet manages to perform versions of both tracks that match the wide spectrum of sounds heard on the studio versions. “We've practiced at Kyle [Murphy]’s house for years,” Silver shares. “This is where we recorded our demos, we’ve had a couple photoshoots here—Kyle’s house is basically the home for the Tory Silver band.”
