Launched at the onset of the pandemic, Montreal’s Born at Midnite is the bedroom-pop brainchild of TOPS guitarist David Carriere and synthpop artist Amery Sandford, who together concoct a playful blend of contemporary alt-pop and anti-commercialist punk messaging. Among the first singles from their forthcoming debut album Eternal BAM Nation was “Wash You Out,” a scaled-down club track that may be a better fit for the types of dance functions we were throwing while still in lockdown. “‘Wash You Out’ condemns overintellectualizing primal thoughts to a dreamy and longing beat,” the duo shared upon the track’s release back in April. “An ever so slight garage feel and a Y2K halftime chorus seal the deal. After a half decade of party experience, we had no choice but to ‘Publish papers on going out, conclusion: it was bumpin’.’”
It’s this single that the pair chose to perform on a balcony for a dusk-lit “Neighborhoods” session in their Quebec hometown. After a false start, Carriere provides the song’s instrumental on guitar in place of the recording’s electronic beat while Amery delivers vocals.
