Dogwood Tales, the Virginia-based band of longtime friends Kyle Grim, Ben Ryan, Jake Golibart, and Danny Gibney, have shared “Ralph Sampson” ahead of their new LP, Every Star in Rockingham County. Paying homage to the titular NBA Hall of Famer, the single is built around crunchy guitars, delightfully hooky melodies, some tastefully appointed country twang, and lyrics about dads playing high school hoops against the song’s namesake.
“This song is about believing that there is meaning in the simple act of believing, regardless of how real or not real these ideas we believe in might be,” the band shares. “I have lived a lot of life with what has felt like an absence of structure for my thoughts and constructs of meaning and I often feel overwhelmed living in that internal space. Even when my head spins in the midst of all of life’s random unfolding, I find reaching out for something true is meaningful even when the truth feels elusive.”
