To ensure a stadium-ready indie-rock sound on their second album, Perth quartet DICE enlisted Joe Chiccarelli to take on production duties for I Thought the Altitude Would Make It Worth the View, setting it firmly within the lineage of records he’s previously had a hand in from The Strokes, The Raconteurs, Young the Giant, and plenty more. While the studio recordings sound great on their own merits, they also invite listeners to picture each song in a live setting before DICE touch down Stateside this fall for a month-long tour in support of their latest chapter. In the meantime, the band recorded live versions of the album cuts “Loose Change” and “Echo” for “FLOOD Sessions” while stopping by Tone City Records in Southwestern Australia. Jamming both tracks in front of a dimly lit backdrop, it’s the perfect balance of studio sound and live music visuals.
As for their brief set list, the band notes that “Loose Change” is about “taking risks and getting out from the safety net to achieve what you set out for. This is something we definitely experienced throughout the journey of this band being on hard budgets and playing every show we could find. This track is a nice reminder that it’s all a matter of the mind and anybody can achieve what they strive for.” Regarding the second song, they added: “‘Echo’ is about embracing the quirks and differences that shape who you are and to illustrate the point that it’s OK to be different. Having gone through both sides of the storyline, we wanted to look at someone who was bright and full of energy through the eyes of someone quiet, calm, and not the social type. It kinda takes the conversation to a new place which embraces both sides while still celebrating each.”
