LOS ANGELES, CA – SEPTEMBER 20: Actors Sophie Turner, Gwendoline Christie, Maisie Williams, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Carice van Houten, writer David Benioff, actor Peter Dinklage, Conleth Hill, writer D. B. Weiss, Lena Headey, director David Nutter and actors John Bradley-West and Alfie Allen, winners of Outstanding Drama Series for ‘Game of Thrones’, pose in the press room at the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on September 20, 2015 in Los Angeles, California.(Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)

How do you spell good television? Well, according to the 67th Primetime Emmys, it’s just three little letters: H-B-O. Last night, the premium cable network (which used to boast its separation from television) dominated the small screen award show taking home the top prizes for Best Drama (Game of Thrones), Best Comedy (Veep), and Best Limited Series (Olive Kitteridge). At least Jon Stewart said good-bye to the Emmys with his incarnation of The Daily Show taking home the top Variety Series honors.

While HBO swept the series categories, the acting races were, by far, the most exciting. Jon Hamm literally climbed onto the stage to accept his first (first!) Emmy for being Don Draper and (maybe even more surprisingly) Mad Men‘s first acting win ever. Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black) made history as the first woman to win a comedic and dramatic Emmy for the same role—a feat that previously only credited to Ed Asner—and Viola Davis took home the top dramatic acting honor (the first black woman to win Outstanding Actress in a Drama series), making one of the most eloquent speeches in award show history.

Even with a rocky start, Andy Samberg kept the (actually on-time) broadcast moving with a healthy mix of dad jokes and pretaped bits. Viewers did feel betrayed though when, after doing us a solid and giving us free HBO Go (email: [email protected], password: password1), Samberg showed a huge spoiler-filled montage of shows that ended this year. But, by the time that Tracy Morgan hit the stage to present the Best Drama award, all scorn was forgotten and the entire audience was on their feet, holding back tears.
