Yoni Wolf and his band of literal and figurative bros in WHY? have unveiled a music video for new single “Story of My Life,” which will be featured on the Cincinnati-based project’s forthcoming LP, Oh Golly / Yes Lord. The album will drop on October 30. But what’s this I hear? The second side of the release—the Yes Lord side—is out now. Yoni Wolf said “fuck it, we ball” and dropped the damn thing without nary a worry to algorithmic demands or machine-learning marketing schedules.
The video for “Story of My Life“ is a charmer, featuring Yoni, his dog Marty Mars, Teen Suicide’s Kitty Ray (who also raps on the track!), his parents, a number of youth sports participants, and more, helping the songwriter tell—you guessed it—the story of his life. Fans of old-school rappin’ WHY? will dig this cut. New heads will be equally delighted, I suspect. Also, anyone who loves a kid sporting a fake mustache is in for a chuckle, too. “I don’t know exactly what I’m looking for,” Yoni sings, “But I’ll know it when I find it / That’s the story of my life.” That’s a WHY?-ass line if I’ve ever heard one. And y’all know I love a WHY?-ass line.
“‘Story of My Life’ is about being indoctrinated with the cultural myth of The One and being plagued by perfectionism because of it,” Wolf shares. “Love is all around us and yet this seemingly endless search goes on. The video was born out of the story in the first two verses of the song; an attempt to identify the moment of inception and locate the seeds of this myth within myself. Will I eventually root them out in therapy or in an ayahuasca ceremony or some shit? Tune in to the full album to find out lol.”
WHY? also announced a North American tour, set to begin on November 11 in Columbus, Ohio. In LA, the band will perform at Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever on December 9. View their full run of shows here.
